Mount Rinjani, a stratovolcano, is the highest mountain on the island of Lombok and one of the highest in Indonesia. It is situated in the north of Lombok. What stands out most about this mountain is the beauty of the scenery in the crater and the spectacular views you get from the top.

Getting There: International airports: Denpasar, Jakarta, Nearest domestic airport: Mataram/Ampenan. From Mataram, Ampenan, Senggigi, the "Gilis", or Labuhan Lombok go by (boat), bus, microbus and/or taxi to either Sembalun Lawang (1,156 m) or Senaru (601 m). Sembalun Lawang is situated on the eastern side of Rinjani, Senaru is situated on its northern side. The two villages are the main starting points for the trek.

Routes: There are several routes on Rinjani. The two main routes are the following: from Sembalun Lawang on the eastern side, and from Senaru on the northern side.

The two routes are quite different. The trail from Sembalun Lawang leads up through savannah and open mountain forest. The ascent from Senaru is a walk-up through dense mountain rain forest, which noticeably changes with the altitude.

Other routes: You can walk up to the crater from Torean, a small village near Bayan, on the northern side of Rinjani. The trail follows the stream that flows from Lake Segara Anak and the hot springs. You can also climb the south side from either Sesaot, Tetebatu, or from Pesugulan, a small village near Sapit. The last-mentioned route leads up to Pelawangan II. When To Climb: April - November (during the dry season).

Balikpapan, E. Kalimantan: The Kutai palace, together with the Kutai Kartanegara regency administration and tourism office, are launching the 2009 Erau Tempong Tawar festival, a Kutai community traditional event, in the regency capital Tenggarong, which will be held from July 26 until Aug. 3.

The local community, domestic and foreign visitors have always had a keen interest in the Erau festival, especially countries within the region. The event cost around Rp 1.5 billion (about US$150,000) to organize.

The Erau Festival will not be postponed despite the H1N1 pandemic and the recent bomb attacks in Jakarta. "The Erau Festival will take place as scheduled. We believe it will still be packed with locals as well as foreign tourists," said East Kalimantan tourism office head Firminus Kunum.

The eight-day festival will showcase a series of traditional art and cultural performances as well as a royal ritual to repel bad luck and disasters.

The islands of the Komodo Dragon: Rinca & Komodo Islands are part of the complex of 175 islands (about 90% unhabitant), situated 200 nautical miles east of Bali, between the islands of Flores and Sumbawa.

It was declared as a Man and Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site in 1986. KNP includes three major islands - Komodo, Rinca and Padar and numerous smaller islands together totaling 41,000 ha of land contains 132,000 ha of marine waters.

The corals in Komodo National park are pristine, with Mantas, sharks, turtles, dolphins, dugong, many pelagics, to the tiny pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, frog fish, you name it we’ve got it. The sites vary from gentle easy coral slopes to heart pounding adrenalin rides, from the warm waters of the Flores Sea in the north to the chillier waters down south in the Indian Ocean, the underwater terrain is so varied with sheer cliff walls, pinnacles, sandy flat bottoms, underwater plateaus, slopes, caves, swim-throughs, channels, all with varying colours, sizes and types of coral both hard and soft.

The Indonesian Miniature Park (in Indonesian is Taman Mini Indonesia Indah) is the miniature park that shows the diversity of cultures in Indonesia. There is a pavilion for each of Indonesia’s 26 provinces, and one for East Timor, which has just gained independence after a 23-year struggle for independence.

How to get there? If you come from Kuta and want to avoid crossing Denpasar, take the direct shuttle bus which departs from Kuta, while from Ubud take a similar shuttle at 8.15 am or 4 pm. These buses also run the return journey. The best way to explore the area's back roads is by car, motorbike or bicycle, all of which can be rented at several outlets in Candidasa.

From Balikpapan you have to fly an hour to Tanjung Redeb, the capital of Berau Regency by KAL Star, Deraya or DAS. If you want to go by sea, you can take boat from Samarinda or Tarakan to Tanjung Redeb and continue by rented motorboat.

Getting There

Back from Bunaken to Manado usually early in the morning, around 7-8 a.m
